In autumn, and especially around Halloween time, going pumpkin picking in Manchester is a popular thing to do.
From Dunham Massey pumpkin patch to hidden gems, we tell you exactly where you can go to get pumpkins in Manchester and what type of activities you can do there.
The Dunham Pumpkin Patch
As summer comes to an end you might start to think about pumpkin picking in Manchester.
This pumpkin patch is in Dunham Massey, around 40 minute’s drive from Manchester.
Pumpkin picking at Dunham begins at the end of September through to the end of October.
Two months to pick your favourite pumpkins and get in the autumnal, hot chocolate drinking mood.
They’ve planted more than 30,000 pumpkins! From picture perfect orange pumpkins to quirky shapes and sizes they’ve got them all.
Pick your pumpkin then climb on vintage tractors and take a wagon ride.
Be sure to bring your camera. You can take photos in their giant chair, in the pumpkin patch or at their picture boards. Feeling the fatigue after picking the perfect pumpkin?
Dunham Pumpkin Patch also has amazing woodfired pizza in their Apple Barn.
Cockfields Farm
Another of the best places for pumpkin picking in Greater Manchester is at Cockfields Farm Park.
There’s always so much going on at Cockfields Farm, with a variety of fun events throughout the year.
Of course, as summer turns to autumn activities at the park turn a little spooky with a hue of pumpkin orange.
They’ve got a “Little Pumpkin Pickers” program which runs midweek.
You and your little ones can grab a wheelbarrow and pick your favourite pumpkins.
You can take them home to carve or carve them at the farm.
Their “Pumpkin After Dark” is a spooky event with live music, marshmallows, pumpkin picking, carving competitions and more.
Be sure to check out the farm animals whilst you are there, they even have reptiles!
To get to Cockfields from central Manchester you can take the pink line Metrolink and the 425 bus or it’s just a 35 minute drive via the Oldham Road.
The Pumpkin Patch at Tatton Park
Every year Tatton Park hosts their pumpkin patch event. Usually taking place around the end of October, this experience allows you to not only pick pumpkins but see an array of farm animals.
You should definitely prepare yourself to get a little mucky as you hand pick your own pumpkin from the field. There are no perfectly polished pumpkins here, it’s all about the earthy farm vibe!
Tatton Park in Knutsford is a fantastic day trip in itself and the orange hues of pumpkins just adds that extra festive feel. By car it takes around 40 minutes to reach Tatton Park via the A5103 and M56.
Whilst at Tatton Park you can explore the Mansion, the old hall, gardens, farm and the stable yard for a spot of shopping and dining.
Kenyon Hall Farm
Kenyon Hall Farm in Warrington is a lovely location for pumpkin picking near Manchester.
The farm is between Manchester and Liverpool and takes around 30 minutes to drive from the city centre via the M62.
So, what in the world of pumpkins is going on at Kenyon Hall Farm this autumn?
They have planted over 15,000 pumpkins and squashes in classic orange and an array of funky colours and shapes.
You will need to purchase tickets to enter the Pumpkin Festival 2023.
They will be released in late August, starting in late September.
Kenyon Hall Farm has a farm shop, plant centre, play area and café which are open year-round, so when you visit you can really make a day of it.
This is a wonderful spot for the whole family, especially if you have little kids.
Brookheys Farm
Head to Brookheys Farm in Altrincham for more pumpkin patch excitement.
Brookheys Farm is around 40 minutes southwest of the city centre via the A56.
Brookheys Farm is a working farm that offers pumpkin picking in October.
Whether you are visiting as a family, with friends or as a couple there’s something fun to do.
This year will be the biggest pumpkin patch yet with more varieties and sizes to choose from.
They specialise in a range of decorative pumpkins as well as delicious ones for eating.
Pick up your traditional jack-o-lantern pumpkins, miniature munchkins that fit perfectly in your hand and even yellow and blue ones.
As well as pumpkin picking there will be a tractor and trailer shuttle and an edible sweetcorn maize.
As it’s a farm, you will also get to see their beautiful highland cows, goats, chickens, sheep and an array of other farm animals.
Lancaster Park and Animal Farm
Lancaster Park and Animal Farm is in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
This pumpkin farm in Manchester is easily accessible from the city centre.
You can take the northern line train from Manchester Victoria to Mills Hill which takes just 12 minutes then walk for around one minute to Lancaster Park.
There’s so much to do on the farm.
From animal petting and bathing giant tortoises to feeding the animals on a nature walk, this is certainly a fantastic day out for families (and adults too).
There’s also the caterpillar ride, the rooster rally racer and a digger corner.
But when the weather begins to get colder and pumpkin season is upon us there are a whole array of other activities on offer at the park.
You can pick your pumpkin and carve it on site, meaning no mess for you to clean up!
Synonymous with pumpkins is Halloween and you can enter Lancaster Park’s haunted house.
Smithills Open Farm
Another of the best places for pumpkin picking in Greater Manchester is Smithills Open Farm in Bolton.
You can easily drive from the city centre which takes just 40 minutes.
They make a big deal out of their pumpkin experience at Smithills Open Farm.
Starting around mid-October you can arrive and expect to see farm staff in fancy dress.
Expect to see a few scarecrows, walking pumpkins and zombies!
You can take part in a mixture of classic pumpkin picking and Halloween celebrations.
There’s always lots to do at pumpkin picking.
Pose for photos with their character billboards or get those family shots on the pumpkin filled tractor.
On your way to the pumpkin patch, spot the cows and enjoy a nice walk.
It might be getting colder but their ice cream shop is well worth a visit and the ice cream is made from their cow’s milk!
Reddish Vale Farm
Looking for a pumpkin patch in Manchester? Look no further than Reddish Vale Farm in Stockport, just 25 minutes’ drive from the city centre.
So, what’s going on at Reddish Vale Farm around Halloween time? Well, their Halloween Festival runs between the 7th and the 29th of October and provides fun for the whole family.
If you turn up in a fancy dress costume you might just win yourself some sweets!
New additions to the experience in 2023 include the “Haunted Tractor Ride” and the “Witches and Wizards Show and Dance”.
Whilst visiting the pumpkin patch grab your wheelbarrow and search through 1000 pumpkins for your favourite.
You can take your pumpkin to the carving cavern or take it home as it is.
Old Mill Farm Shop
The Old Mill Farm Shop is in Hyde in Tameside, Greater Manchester.
It is actually super close to the Peak District so you could combine a pumpkin picking experience with a walk in the Peaks!
From Manchester it takes around 45 minutes to drive via the M67 and A57.
Old Mill Farm hosts an annual pumpkin patch and Halloween event.
Their event usually takes place around the end of October throughout the week and on weekends.
Check back in on their website at the end of September to see their current schedule and to book tickets.
In previous years the event has included picking your perfect pumpkin, carving it (and leaving the mess), a picture scavenger hunt and the chance to take lots of pumpkin pictures.
Whilst you are there why not pop over and see the farm animals. There are donkeys, rabbits, pygmy goats, ducks, sheep and the crowd favourite Larry the llama. You can view all the animals for free!
Lymefield Garden Centre, Farm Shop and Tea Room
The Lymefield Garden Centre hosts an annual pumpkin patch event where the proceeds go to charity.
Pick your favourite pumpkin from their patch and then you can head over to the carving area.
Forget the process of cleaning up and finding splatters of pumpkin all over the kitchen weeks later, at Lymefield they’ll take care of all that for you.
The Lymefield farm shop and tea room will also be getting into the Halloween and pumpkin picking mood.
They usually serve up tasty spooky treats to indulge on after all the hard work carving.
There’s also a fun adventure trail with plenty of picture opportunities on the way.
Lymefield Garden Centre is around 13 miles from Manchester city centre.
You can drive (35 minutes) or take the train from Manchester Piccadilly to Broadbottom station and then walk for around 10 minutes to the garden centre.
Libby’s Pumpkin Patch
For pumpkin picking near Manchester head to Libby’s Pumpkin Patch in Macclesfield. It is just under an hour’s drive south of the city. It is also possible to reach Libby’s by public transport.
You can take the northern train to Macclesfield and then the number 38 Crewe bus to Shellow Lane and then walk for under 10 minutes.
Libby’s is a super affordable family day out as they only charge around £5 per vehicle.
This pumpkin patch is a great place to get outdoors and enjoy nature whilst picking the perfect pumpkin.
Run by a husband-and-wife team and their three boys, this place really feels like a family affair.
From traditional orange pumpkins to enormous white ones and adorable miniatures there’s something for every pumpkin preference.
Other activities throughout the year at Libby’s include the Amazing Maize Maze, the Sunflower Maze and you can even go Christmas tree shopping!
