Ancoats
Ancoats is a vibrant and diverse neighbourhood located in the city centre, just a bit north of the Northern Quarter.
With its pop-up bars, amazing restaurants, cool coworking spaces and local eateries, it’s easy to see why Ancoats is becoming increasingly popular amongst locals and tourists alike.
Ancoats is a district that was developed during the Industrial Revolution.
It is known as “the world’s first industrial suburb” and was full of warehouses at the time.
Once the textile industry started slowing down in Manchester, the neighbourhood became not the nicest one shall we say, with a lot of crimes.
But in the past few years, it was completely renovated and is now the nicest neighbourhood in Manchester city centre.
It’s quiet, peaceful but yet full of activity as well.
You can find loads of amazing restaurants such as Rudy’s pizza (one of the best pizza in Manchester), amazing cocktail bars and Manchester’s only Michelin-starred restaurant, MANA.
It is a beautiful place to live in Manchester as well as to stay for a few days since it’s very conveniently located near the Northern Quarter, only 15 minutes walk from Victoria Station and near the canal (perfect for walks).
Northern Quarter
The Northern Quarter is one of Manchester’s most iconic neighbourhoods.
It is known for its vibrant and alternative atmosphere, with plenty of independent stores, cafes, pubs, restaurants and more.
It’s the perfect place to explore in Manchester if you are looking for something a little bit different.
You can find an amazing array of vintage and second-hand stores, as well as small independent boutiques and galleries.
If you like to discover unique things, make sure to go to Affleck’s. It’s home to a lot of quirky shops as well as Gingers Comfort Emporium, one of the best ice cream places in Manchester.
It’s also the perfect place to get a taste of Manchester’s diverse culture; you can find restaurants from all over the world here, ranging from Thai to Mexican cuisine.
The Northern Quarter is full of unique street art which changes regularly, making it an interesting place to explore.
Stevenson Square and Thomas Street are both great places to check out if you want to discover beautiful murals including some from local artist Akse 19.
If you like music, then the Northern Quarter is definitely the place to go; there are plenty of live music venues and clubs here, so you can be sure to find something to suit your taste.
Matt and Phred’s is an amazing jazz club, perfect to listen to live music.
A bit further up, Band on the Wall is also a venue worth checking out if you want to see a concert.
Finally, if you’d like to laugh all evening, make sure to go to the Frog and Bucket, one of the best comedy clubs in Manchester.

Deansgate
Deansgate is one of the best neighbourhoods in Manchester for nightlife but also a great place to explore.
It is home to some of Manchester’s most iconic buildings, including John Rylands Library and The Beetham Tower.
You will also find a lot of bars and restaurants, making it an excellent place for a night out.
Peter’s Street is a great place to start since it’s home to a lot of bars and nightclubs.
The most popular are Albert Schloss, the Revolucion de Cuba and Dirty Martini.
The Great Northern Warehouse is also home to a lot of entertainment places such as Paradise Skate World, Odeon Cinema and Whistle Punks (axe throwing).
If you fancy some fun games such as beer pong or shuffleboard, Pong and Punk or Box Deansgate will be excellent choices.
In the evening, you can also head to Deansgate Locks, an area full of bars and restaurants such as Lock 91, Revolution and more.
Chorlton
Chorlton is a suburban area located about 10 minutes from the city centre (by tram).
It’s known for its cute cafes, parks and cool bars with live music.
It’s the perfect neighbourhood for those who don’t want to be right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of the city centre but still close enough to enjoy it.
Chorlton is full of great places to eat, from brunch spots to independent restaurants such as the Laundrette, Zaytoon or La Casita.
Chorlton is also home to some of the best parks in Manchester.
Chorlton Water Park and Chorlton Ees Nature Reserve are two must-visits if you fancy a nice walk or picnic.
All in all, Chorlton is a great place to live in Manchester and that’s why it’s so much loved by locals.
If you are visiting, Chorlton will also be a good area but it’s true that I’d recommend staying closer to the city centre since it’s where you will spend most of your time and that way you won’t have to waste time in transport.
Castlefield
Castlefield is an area located in the city centre, just south of Deansgate.
It’s a beautiful area to visit and to live in since it’s home to beautiful canals and is such a quiet area (while still being in the middle of the city).
Castlefield is technically the historic birthplace of Manchester since it’s home to the Roman fort Mamucium, remnants of which are still visible today.
FUN FACT: Manchester was founded by the Romans and named Mamucium which means breast-shaped hills.
Following significant urban regeneration in the 1980s, this once-derelict industrial expanse blossomed into one of Manchester’s most delightful neighbourhoods.
But the absolute highlight of Castlefield is the canal.
The Bridgewater Canal, the world’s first industrial canal, runs through Castlefield.
It’s a beautiful place to go for a canal walk and discover the beautiful architecture of Manchester (you get to see both the new and the old which is quite nice).
The area is also a great place for a meal or a drink.
You’ll find a mix of traditional pubs, modern bars, and a variety of restaurants that cater to different tastes, making it a lively spot for locals and visitors.
The Wharf, Dukes 92 and Barca are great places to go to.
They have terraces by the canal, making it a lovely spot for a cocktail in summer.
Castlefield also boasts urban green spaces such as Castlefield viaduct, a national trust site that is Manchester’s version of the high line in New York City.
It’s an amazing place to go for a walk and admire the views of the cityscape right from there!
Ease of access in Castlefield is a breeze, thanks to its excellent transport infrastructure.
With the Deansgate railway station and tram stop nearby, commuting to work or heading to the city centre of Manchester is a piece of cake.
However, Castlefield isn’t all hustle and bustle; despite its prime location, it harbours a more relaxed, community-focused atmosphere, setting it apart from the city centre’s frenetic energy.
Infused with a laid-back charm and an all-embracing neighbourhood spirit, it offers an escape from the city rush without leaving it.
Another great thing about this area is the Castlefield Bowl, an open-air venue which holds a series of events and concerts throughout the year, transforming the area into a summer hotspot for both locals and tourists.
Altrincham
Altrincham is a suburban district of Greater Manchester, located about 10 miles south-west of the city centre.
It has been recently named one of the best places to live in Britain in 2022 and it’s really easy to see why.
It’s a great place for families, as it offers plenty of green spaces, good schools and excellent transport connections.
Altrincham is full of independent businesses, making it a great place for shopping.
It’s also an excellent place for foodies since it’s home to a lot of nice restaurants and bars.
But the true highlight is Altrincham Market.
This lively food hall is open every day except Mondays and is full of great food stalls, artisan and vintage shops.
In terms of green spaces, you are in for a treat since there are quite a few ones in the area.
The nicest parks are Stamford Park and Dunham Massey which is a National Trust site providing a beautiful historic house, gardens, and deer park (only 20 minutes away).
In terms of transport, you will find the MetroLink tram which connects Altrincham directly to the city centre.
It’s also worth noting that Altrincham is a very pretty area with historical houses but also new buildings, making it diverse and interesting to see.
Finally, Altrincham is ideally located near Manchester airport which is very practical when going on holidays.
New Islington
New Islington is one of the newest up-and-coming areas in Manchester.
It used to be part of Ancoats but is now becoming a neighbourhood in its own right.
It has recently undergone extensive regeneration and is one of the most modern and nicest neighbourhoods near the city centre of Manchester.
You can easily reach it on foot from Ancoats or the Northern Quarter.
It’s home to a lot of newly built buildings, making it a nice residential area but also offices and shops.
But the true highlight of New Islington is its marina.
It’s absolutely stunning with the canals, the boats and all the cafes around.
You can go on a canal walk here or meet with friends for a coffee.
There are a lot of independent coffee shops where you can grab a hot drink or a snack.
Another highlight of the area is Cotton Field Park.
It’s a park with a boardwalk by the marina. It’s an excellent place to go for a stroll or walk your dog.
Whether you are looking for areas to live in Manchester or places to visit, New Islington should be on your radar.
It’s very pretty and nowhere as busy as the Northern Quarter or Ancoats.
Didsbury
Didsbury is a residential area located in South Manchester.
It’s one of the most sought-after areas in Greater Manchester due to its quietness, beautiful houses, local shops and the fact that it has great transport links with Manchester city centre.
It’s split into 3 areas, East Didsbury (best for schools), West Didsbury (best for restaurants) and Didsbury village (known for shops and eateries).
There are a lot of local shops, amazing restaurants and places to go for a drink in Didsbury, which makes it a popular place to go in the evening for people from South Manchester.
The schools in the area are also excellent, which is why a lot of locals choose to buy a house here.
Didsbury Village is also super cute with its Victorian and Edwardian homes, making it a great place to explore.
There are also a lot of green spaces including the Fletcher Moss Park and Botanical Gardens, which is one of the best parks in Manchester.
Finally, it’s extremely well located to the city centre since there is the MetroLink tram, train stations and loads of buses.
Prestwich
Prestwich is one of the best neighbourhoods in North Manchester.
It’s located 5 miles away from the city centre, making it an excellent choice for families who want to be close enough but not too close.
It’s also well known for its excellent transport connections with the city centre thanks to the Metrolink tram and buses.
It’s also very close to the ring road and the M60, very practical for people driving.
Prestwich is full of independent businesses, which makes it an excellent place to shop and eat.
You will find most of them on the high street. This includes cute cafes, Turkish restaurants and more.
There are also a lot of nice bars and pubs including wine bars such as Grape to Grain.
It’s also home to a lot of green spaces including St Mary’s Park, Philips Park (perfect for walks) and Heaton Park (great spot for a family day out).
Quite a few festivals such as the famous Park Life are hosted in the Prestwich area.
You will also find a lot of supermarkets including Tesco and Aldi.
Gay Village
The Manchester Gay Village is a vibrant area in the city centre.
It’s located near Canal Street, near Piccadilly Station and it’s a great place to go out for drinks or food.
The bars here are the best ones in town, with lots of different music styles and many drag shows.
The bars in the Gay village are LGBTQ friendly and have their own unique atmosphere.
It’s also a great place to socialise or just wander around.
You can walk along the canal which is very nice.
There are also plenty of accommodation options if you want to stay for the night including some cool themed hotels.
The Manchester Pride is held here every year in August, and it’s a great opportunity to experience the area in its full glory.
In terms of public transport, it’s very close to Piccadilly station and therefore the tram and trains.
Spinningfields
Spinningfields is one of the most recent neighbourhoods in Manchester’s city centre.
It has quickly gained a reputation as being one of the best neighbourhoods in Manchester, thanks to its modern architecture, upmarket businesses and great restaurants.
The area is full of contemporary office buildings and apartments making it a unique spot in the city centre.
Spinningfields is home to some of the best restaurants in town, including 20 Stories which is one of the best rooftop bars in Manchester and serves an amazing afternoon tea.
There are also plenty of bars and pubs such as The Oast House, a unique rooftop bar with great views of the city.
You will also find chains that are well known for cocktails and bottomless brunches such as The Alchemist or the Ivy.
You can also enjoy some green spaces in the area such as Hardman Square, a popular spot for office workers and visitors to relax and enjoy outdoor events.
While this is a very small city park, it feels very secluded and is so peaceful.
It’s also a great spot to eat lunch on a nice and sunny day.
Spinningfield is also located next to two main attractions in Manchester: the Museum of Science and Industry and Crystal Maze.
Salford Quays
Salford Quays is actually technically part of Salford and not Manchester but it’s still within Greater Manchester and such a good area that we had to mention it!
Salford Quays used to be known as Manchester Docks and were once a major port in Greater Manchester.
Since then, it has been completely transformed into a lively entertainment hub that is home to iconic attractions such as the Lowry theatre and Imperial War Museum North.
It also boasts an array of restaurants, bars and shops for visitors to explore.
It is a very nice place to go for food or drinks since most of the restaurants are located on the waterfront and boast amazing views.
Here you will find some chains such as Nando’s, Bella Italia, The Alchemist but also a few independent places.
Whichever one you choose, you will have a good time because the atmosphere is incredible.
It’s particularly nice to be by the water in summer but you can head there all year round and enjoy it.
If you’re looking for some shopping therapy then Salford Quays is home to the Lowry Outlet Mall, where you can find all sorts of shops.
It’s also a great area for recreational activities such as boat rides and watersports including SUP.
And finally, the Metrolink tram system provides a convenient link between Salford Quays and Manchester city centre as well as other neighbourhoods.
Chinatown
Chinatown is one of the most unique neighbourhoods in Manchester and it’s a must-see for any visitor or local.
It’s located right near Piccadilly Gardens, making it really easy to access no matter where you’re staying.
The area is well known for its authentic Chinese restaurants and buffets.
It’s a foodie’s paradise with plenty of options to choose from.
From dim sum joints to hot pot restaurants, there is something for everyone.
You can also find traditional Chinese supermarkets where you can buy all sorts of ingredients or grocery items.
Chinatown is at its liveliest during Chinese festivities such as the Lunar New Year.
The lion dances, fireworks and parades draw both locals and tourists in large numbers.
It’s a great opportunity to experience some of the local culture while also enjoying delicious food.
The magnificent Chinese Arch stands as a symbol of the cultural exchange and connection between Manchester and China and marks the entrance to Chinatown.
It’s next to a cute park where you can also take photos.
Chinatown is also a great place to visit at night in Manchester because the restaurants usually close quite late and there are a lot of karaokes such as K2.
If you are looking for something fun to do, the karaoke places will be perfect for you!
Levenshulme
Levenshulme is an area located between the City centre and Stockport.
It’s a great place to live as it has all the amenities one needs such as shops, restaurants and bars.
The area is quite lively in terms of local events, markets and initiatives which are often resident-led, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Levenshulme Market operates on Saturdays and is a great social enterprise offering street food, artisanal crafts and vintage goods.
It’s the perfect place to find local businesses, buy unique gifts and get a delicious lunch.
Levenshulme is also home to Highfield Country Park which provides a great place to go for a walk, a run or a picnic.
In terms of food, Levenshulme is well known for its varied selection of restaurants that reflect its multicultural population.
You can find all sorts of cuisines in this neighbourhood, from Italian to Middle Eastern.
It’s also a great place for vegetarians and vegans as there are plenty of options in the area.
It’s also important to note that in terms of houses (whether it’s to buy or rent), Levenshulme is a fairly affordable area in Manchester, which makes it attractive to families, young professionals and artists.
And with its own train station and good transport links to Manchester’s city centre, you can get around quite easily.
Overall, Levenshulme is a great place to live and visit in Manchester as it offers plenty of culture, cuisine and outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy.
Fallowfield
Located after Rusholme and near the Curry Mile, Fallowfield is a dynamic neighbourhood that is known for its lively student scene.
The area is close to many universities including the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University which makes it popular with the student population of Manchester.
This also means that there’s a plethora of affordable housing options in Fallowfield.
Whether you’re looking for a shared student house or an apartment, you’re sure to find something here.
Fallowfield is also an excellent spot if you want to explore the nightlife scene of Manchester as it has plenty of pubs and bars including some with cool beer gardens.
If you’re looking for some outdoor fun, there’s Platt Fields Park which has a lake, walking paths and playgrounds.
It’s the perfect spot for picnics, jogging, going on a walk with your dog or just lounging on sunny days.
And with regular bus services, Fallowfield is well-connected to Manchester’s city centre making it convenient for both work and leisure trips.
Rusholme
Rusholme is famous for being home to the Curry Mile due to its large number of Asian restaurants.
While it doesn’t always have the best reputation, it’s actually a very lovely place to discover, especially if you are a foodie.
Here you will find an incredible range of restaurants, perfect if you are looking for some cheap eats in Manchester!
It is also located near the universities, making it a great place to live for students.
Especially since housing is quite affordable in this area.
There are many buses that go to the city centre and South Manchester as well as the airport, making it easy to get around.
Finally, it’s located near the Whitworth Gallery and Fallowfields.
